GARDEN PROJECTS
Projected January 2027 (Phase One)
“Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Chinese Proverb
We at Hands Serving Uganda understand that simply coming into a community and providing emergency food support is not a long-term solution. It’s great to be able to feed a family that is in dire need but doing this repeatedly is not sustainable. We know that if we want to truly help a community deal with hunger issues, we must do what we can to provide them with the resources needed to become self-sufficient. This is how the idea for the Garden Projects was born. In 2023, we were introduced to the idea of using a farming technique called “Farming God’s Way”. This is a form of conservation agriculture with proven results, showing that it is much more successful in yielding crops than traditional African gardening methods. For more details on Farming God’s Way, visit: https://www.faithplans.org/post/farming-god-s-way-a-biblical-approach-to-agriculture.
Through our research over past couple of years, we have learned that implementing the Farming God's Way techniques will require fairly large plots of land to be able to provide food for a large number of families. In addition, the location of the land will be very important because some communities allow their livestock to roam free during certain seasons, which has the potential to create problems for the gardens. For this reason, we continue to seek suitable location(s) to implement the Farming God's Way methods.
In February 2026, we were also introduced to the concept of growing food in sack gardens. This method will allow us to help a greater number of families in a shorter period of time, for substantially less financial requirement. One of the great things about the sack gardens is it will allow families to grow food right outside their home, making it easier for them to manage. For only $25, you can provide a family with a Garden Kit, which will get them started on their own sack gardens. Each Garden Kit includes: 4 sacks, watering can, gardening tool, seeds, soap, fertilizer, and pesticides.
Our goal is to raise the funds needed to provide 200 families with a Garden Kit when we visit Uganda later this year.
